Na marcha do Prof. Mario Alinei (1926 – 2018)

[English version below] O professor Mario Alinei partiu deste mundo no passado 9 de Agosto(*), a um dia de fazer 92 anos cheios de incansável trabalho.

Catedrático na Universidade de Utreque (Países Baixos), onde ensinou durante quase trinta anos, Alinei é um dos mais grandes linguistas da época contemporânea.

Foi um pioneiro no uso da informática na linguística, um dos poucos que já nos anos 1960 aplicava inovaçons científicas e técnicas ao estudo sistematizado da linguagem, algo que acabou por resultar num salto qualitativo sem discussom nas investigaçons filológicas.

Com centenas de publicaçons de primeiro nível no campo da dialectologia, este italiano estabeleceu as bases da chamada Arqueologia Linguística e do Paradigma da Continuidade Paleolítica. Além disso, ele foi o fundador da famosa revista de semântica teórica e aplicada Quaderni di semantica e, até a sua reforma, foi presidente do Atlas Linguarum Europae da UNESCO, entre outros muitos cargos e distinçons.

Noutras palavras, a sabedoria de Alinei abriu a porta a umha autêntica revoluçom intelectual que conseguiu inspirar inúmeros trabalhos multidisciplinares, resultando numha mudança radical na percepçom académica dos primórdios da fala humana e origens das línguas e culturas nativas europeias.

Focando no nosso caso, é graças a Alinei que temos confirmaçom daquelas outrora “lendas” sobre a celticidade da nossa terra, nomeadamente da nossa terra ser de facto o berce da tal cultura celta. Nunca poderemos agradecer abondo obras como, por exemplo, A área galega na prehistoria lingüística e cultural da Europa, escrita polo seu amigo e discípulo Prof. Francesco Benozzo, mas totalmente inspirada e participada polo mesmíssimo Mario Alinei.

E agora pode bem que ande navegando os mares do oeste caminho do Além, como relata a nossa tradiçom… Que gloriosa imagem para este gigante! Mágoa só do nosso egoísmo de nom te-lo podido conhecer em pessoa nesta vida, mas doutra vez será.

Até sempre Mestre, guardaremos o seu legado.

 

[English version] Professor Mario Alinei departed this world on last August 9^th, a day shy of turning 92(*). His was a life of tireless work.

Professor at the University of Utrecht (The Netherlands), where he taught for almost thirty years, Alinei is one of the greatest linguists of the contemporary age.

He was a pioneer in the use of computer science in linguistics, one of the few who (already in the 1960s) applied scientific and technical innovations to the systematised study of language, which eventually resulted in a major qualitative breakthrough in philological research.

With hundreds of first-class publications in the field of dialectology, the Italian established the foundations for the so-called Linguistic Archaeology and the Paleolithic Continuity Paradigm. In addition, he was the founder of the famous journal on theoretical and applied semantics Quaderni di semantica and, until his retirement, he was the president of UNESCO’s Atlas Linguarum Europae, among many other positions and distinctions.

In other words, the wisdom of Alinei opened the door to a true intellectual revolution which managed to inspire countless multidisciplinary works, thus resulting in a radical shift in the academic perception of the beginnings of human speech and the origins of European native languages and cultures.

Regarding our case, thanks to Alinei we have confirmation of those once “legends” about the Celticity of our land, namely about our land being in fact the cradle of said Celtic culture. We will never be able to convey our gratitude for works such as A área galega na prehistoria lingüística e cultural da Europa, written by his friend and disciple Prof. Francesco Benozzo, but totally inspired and guided by the very Mario Alinei.

And now he may well be sailing the seas of the west, en-route to the Beyond, as our tradition tells… What a glorious image for this giant! Our only pity is the selfish thought of not having had the chance to meet him in person in this life, but we will find a time.

Farewell for now, professor. We will keep your legacy.

 

(*) Correcçom: Fuimos informados de que, embora o Prof. Alinei faleceu pouco antes da meia-noite do 8 para o 9, por motivos técnicos o corpo médico determinou a sua defunçom oficial já no dia 9. Corrigimos entom a data e colocamos 9 na vez de 8.

Correction: We have been informed that, although Prof. Alinei passed shortly before midnight on the 8th to the 9th, technical reasons led the medical team to certify the oficial date of death on the 9th. We amend then the date and replace 8 for 9.
